Verlin LeRoy Welch of Hubbell, NE the son of Doss and EllaMae (Peterson) Welch was born July 11, 1931 in Haddam, KS. He departed this life Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Thayer County Health Service in Hebron, NE at the age of 88.

 

Verlin grew up in and around Morroville, KS and graduated from Morroville High School with the class of 1949. After graduating he worked for Stanton Farm Service for two years before entering the armed forces.

 

On November 5, 1952, Verlin entered the United States Army, and he was honorably discharged August 4, 1954.

 

He was baptized and confirmed at The Good Shepard Church in Washington, KS by Pastor Harvey Bernardt in 1956.

 

Verlin was united in marriage on April 8, 1956 to Roberta Holle at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hanover, KS. This union was blessed with the birth of five children.

 

In 1954, Verlin continued his farming career which extended till the time of his death. While farming, he helped Roberta on their new venture buying the Mill Wheel Restaurant in Hubbell, NE in 1991 and owned and operated it until 2003. They also hosted foreign exchange students from Germany, Finland, and Switzerland.

 

The couple loved to travel visiting Germany, Russia, Bahamas, and many other places.

 

Verlin was a Charter Member of The Hubbell Lion’s Club, past president of the Thayer County Feeders, Thayer County Pork Producers, Hubbell Volunteer Fire Department, Chester-Hubbell School Board, American Legion Post 317, and an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hubbell, NE.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son Leslie, one brother Donald Welch, brother-in-law Lloyd Wells, infant grandson Dillon Welch.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Roberta, three sons; Ron Welch and wife Marsha of Reynolds, NE, Lyle Welch and wife Bonnie of Hubbell, NE, Dave Welch and wife Dana of Park City, KS, one daughter Janell Rundus and husband James of Munden, KS, brother Keith Welch and wife Alberta of Leonardville, KS, sisters; Anita Wells of Gretna, NE, and Donna Wichman and husband Ron of Clay Center, KS, grandchildren; Justina Hissong and husband Tysen of Chester, NE, Jerod Welch and wife Beth of Hubbell, NE, Stacey Turner and husband Xriston of Corinth, TX, Holly Rundus and fiancé` Robert Aldridge of Munden, KS, Victoria Welch of Lincoln, NE, Olivia Welch of Peru, NE, Lance and Lucas Welch of Park City, KS, 9 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at St John Lutheran Church in Chester, NE at 10:30AM. Visitation will be Monday, February 17, 2020 from 2PM to 7PM with family greeting friends from 4PM to 6PM at Kroll Funeral Home in Hebron. Officiant will be Pastor Robert Hopkins, organist JoAnne Poppe, soloist Ken Hoge singing “Amazing Grace”, congregational hymns “Nearer My God To Thee” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”. Memorials in care of the family. Casket Bearers; Jerod Welch, Lucas Welch, Lance Welch, Logan Tietjen, Cameron Hissong, Jayden Hissong, Braxton Welch, Sawyer Turner, Robert Aldridge III, honorary casket bearers; Bill Mumford, Charles Fangmeier, Dan Wiedel, Bruce Wiedel, Finis Reid, Mark Tipton, Bob Meyer, Mike Fangmeier, Roger Lambert, Duane Rippe, and Jack Long. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery rural Hubbell with military honors by Thayer County American Legion Posts. Condolences may be left at www.krollfh.com.
