Melvin Porth Obituary

Melvin L. Porth, was born September 30, 1932, in Winfield, Kansas, the son of Arthur and Lena Porth. He was united in marriage with Doris J. Grady on May 6, 1956, at Broadway Christian Church in Wichita, Kansas. This union was blessed with two daughters.

Melvin “Mel” was a mechanic/machinist by trade. He managed the airport in Clay Center, Kansas, naming it "Porth-Aire" until he moved his young family to Westcliffe, Colorado. While in Colorado, he taught aircraft mechanics in Denver for two years and opened an aircraft/auto-truck mechanic business in Westcliffe. For the last twenty years of his formal working career, he worked as a carpenter and finally in janitorial and maintenance of the public school buildings in Westcliffe. Mel’s greatest joy was helping others by fixing things. He liked to say that he would attempt to “do the impossible” in his repair work.

Mel was made a child of God and an heir of His eternal kingdom by the power of the Holy Spirit working through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism as an infant at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield, Kansas. Later he confirmed his baptismal vows as a youth at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church-Friedensau, Hebron, Nebraska until his death.

After a long battle with cancer, the Lord in His goodness, mercy and love, saw fit to take the soul of Melvin L. Porth from this veil of tears to Himself in heaven this past Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Courtyard Terrace in Hebron, Nebraska. He was 91 years, 4 months and 1 day old at his death. His body will await the resurrection from the dead when Christ will give all believers glorified bodies like to His own and will bring them to be with Him forever.

Mel is survived by his wife, Doris, of 68 years; daughters, Karen Kasten of Wichita, Kansas and Jean (Maurice) Schardt of Carleton, Nebraska; grandchildren, Hunter (Jennifer) Kasten of Fishers, Indiana, Whitney (Carlos) Amaya of Wichita, Kansas, Kristen Williams of Knoxville, Tennessee, Carrie (Bryan) Merry of Lincoln, Nebraska, Hannah (Troy) Kane of Carleton, Nebraska, Lacey (Grant) Friesen of Henderson, Nebraska and great grandchildren, Henry and Benjamin Kasten, Kalel Rogers, Khloe Kasten, McKenzie, Caitlin and Logan Merry, Wyatt, Ryker and Kylee Kane, and Louis Friesen.

Contribution in Mel’s memory can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Deshler Lutheran School through Trinity Lutheran Church, Hebron, Nebraska.

Services were Saturday, 3:00 pm, February 10, 2024, at Faith Lutheran Church in Hebron, Nebraska with the Rev. Jose Flores officiating.
