Louis H. J. Peters the son of Heinrich and Heyelena (Collman) Peters was born on a farm near Hardy, NE on March 9, 1915. He died Friday, January 13, 2006 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 4 days.
Louis was baptized March 31, 1915 by Pastor F. Schardt and confirmed March 30, 1930 by Pastor C.W. Seybold at St. Peters Church in rural Byron, NE. His confirmation verse was John 6:67-69. Louis grew up on a farm near Hardy, NE and completed the eighth grade at District 59 in Nuckolls County. Upon completion of his education, Louis helped his father with the farming. In 1929 the family moved to a farm south of Deshler.
Louis and Minerva (Koester) were married on September 14, 1944 at St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Byron, NE by Rev. L.C. Lentz. They had known each other many years, as they were neighbors. Born to this union were 2 sons and one daughter. Louis farmed until he and his wife moved to Hebron to retire in 1986. Their son, Jon and his family moved to the farm and continued farming.
Louis was on the rural Fire Board, Deshler Public School Board, Peace Lutheran Church Council, neighborhood card club, and enjoyed building projects. He liked going for coffee at the bakery with friends, and he drove the first tractor he ever owned, a 1940 Farmall H, in the 4th of July parade in 1991. Louis enjoyed playing horseshoes, cards, especially enjoyable and meaningful were the family gatherings. His great granddaughters always knew where his container of special sweet treats were and lovingly referred to him as Grandpa M & M. Louis was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Byron until it closed. He and his family then became members of Peace Lutheran Church.
His loving wife, Minerva, was called to her Eternal Home on May 1, 1991. Louis continued to live in their home in Hebron until moving to the Riverside Assisted Living in Hebron in 2000. On April 4, 2004 he was admitted to Blue Valley Lutheran Home. Louis wished to return to the Deshler community, he was admitted to Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler on
Sept. 9, 2004.
Louis is preceded in death by his parents, wife Minerva, brother Lawrence Peters and wife Joan, sisters Lillie Kroeger and husband Otto, Mabel Abelbeck, two brother-in-laws Vernon Fintel and Wilbert Marquart.
Survivors are two sons Jim Peters and wife Sharon of Lincoln, NE, Jon Peters and wife Linda of Deshler, NE, one daughter Kathy Degenhardt and husband Denny of Hebron, NE. Sisters Leona Marquart and Irene Fintel both of Deshler, NE. One brother-in-law Ervin Abelbeck of York, NE. 6 grandchildren, Brett Peters and wife Christina of Lincoln, NE, Chad Peters of Sioux City, IA, Melissa Peters of Kearney, NE, Nathan Peters of Deshler, NE, Kelly Hanson and husband Darren of Lexington, NE, and Ryan Degenhardt of Lincoln, NE, and 3 great-grandchildren Clarissa, Courtney, and Andrew Hanson all of Lexington, NE.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 16, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler, NE. Officiant Rev. Phillip Nielsen. Visitation will be Sunday, January 15 from noon to 7 pm at the Deshler Memorial Funeral Home in Deshler, NE. Organist Julia Pohlmann, congregational hymns "On Eagles Wings", Lord, Take My Hand And Lead Me", "What Wonderous Love Is This". Casket Bearers are Brett Peters, Chad Peters, Ryan Degenhardt, Nathan Peters, Darren Hanson, Rich Gergen. Honorary Casket Bearers are Christina Peters, Melissa Peters, Kelly Hanson, Clarissa Hanson, Courtney Hanson, and Andrew Hanson. Burial will be at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Deshler. Deshler Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
