Karis Valjean Kuhlmann of Chester, Ne, the son of Charles and Ella (Weers) Kuhlmann was born on a farm near Chester, Ne on December 1, 1937. He departed this life on June 1, 2023 at his home in rural Chester, Ne. Karis was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester.

He attended a country school and later graduated from Chester High School in 1955. He joined the United States Navy in June 30, 1955 and was honorably discharged with a good conduct medal November 21, 1958.

Karis married Shirley Gehle on September 12, 1959. This union was blessed with 3 children. Karis managed and worked at Hill Oil Company in Chester. He also worked in construction. Farming and raising cattle were his passion as well as his dog, Sammy. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and loved telling stories of his service in the Navy.

He is preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his parents, and sister MaryAnn Thornton.

He is survived by his sons, Scot Kuhlmann and wife Lori of Chester, Rob Kuhlmann and wife Deb of Chester, Michele and husband Charles Dinkel of Chester. Grandchildren; Justin Kuhlmann of Chester, Jennifer Craig and husband Nathan of Munden, Ks., Steven Kuhlmann and wife Christie of Chester, Sarah Watson and husband Tyler of Hebron, Kelly Clar Parker and special friend Garrett of Hebron, Becky Day of Hebron and Curtis Day and wife of Michel, Tx. sister; Sharon Thomas of Kansas City, Missouri. Great-Grandchildren; Taylor and Husband Nick of Foster, Ne, Dalton of Lincoln, Ne, JaeLynn, Pierce, Lilyana Watson of Hebron, Corban and Hudson Craig of Munden, Ks. Kaila, Autumn Barr of Hebron. Chloe, and Clarabel of Hebron. Haley, Addison, and Keegan of Texas. One great-great grandchild, Arlo of Foster, Ne, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, NE at 2 PM. Officiant will be Pastor Greg Schaffer, organist Carol Wassom, congregational hymns “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “On Eagles Wings”. Casket bearers; Justin Kuhlmann, Steven Kuhlmann, Nathan Craig, Tyler Watson, Dalton Kuhlmann, and Nick Ussery. Visitation will be Monday, June 5, 2023 at Kroll Funeral Home in Hebron, NE 2-6 PM.
