Elmer John Holtzen of Deshler, NE the son of Theodore and Anna (Mueller) Holtzen was born August 28, 1925 near Davenport, NE. He was called to his heavenly home on Friday, May 15, 2020 at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron, NE at the age of 94 years.

He was baptized September 25, 1925 and confirmed May 7, 1939 both at Kiowa Lutheran Church.

Elmer grew up on a farm near Kiowa where he attended school through the 8th grade. He then went to work helping his father on the farm and spent his entire life working the ground, and raising livestock. He was still on the farm at the time of his death, doing what he could, even the mowing.

Elmer married Mildred Schardt April 5, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedensau, NE and this year celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. This marriage was blessed with three children.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedensau, NE where he held many different offices, was a member of the church choir, and a member of Lutheran Layman’s League. He was a charter member of the Deshler Lions Club, a member of the Hebron Flying Club and served on the Hebron Co-op Board.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Norman Holtzen, and Harold Holtzen and wife Lenora, sister Elda and husband Orvil Heitmann, sisters-in-law; Irma Ohlrich and husband Lawrence, Lorine Rupprecht and husband Reuben, Emily Siebenneicher and husband Wayne, Valora Wurtz and husband Herman, brothers-in-law; Edgar Schardt and wife Vera, Paul Schardt and wife Grace, Leonard Schardt and wife Alice, Lawrence Ritterling, Delmar Eickmann, and daughter-in-law Margie Holtzen.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Holtzen of Deshler, NE, sons; Rod Holtzen of Davenport, NE, and Dale Holtzen and wife Ramona of Davenport, NE, daughter Barb Bedke and husband Jeff of Lincoln, NE, 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

A private family service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church Friedensau, NE. Visitation will be Monday, May 18, 2020 2PM to 6PM at Kroll Funeral Home in Deshler, NE. Officiant will be Pastor Jose Flores, organist Lois Pohlmann congregational hymns “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”, casket bearers; Rod Holtzen, Dale Holtzen, Barb Bedke, Jeff Bedke, Mike Holtzen, and Ray Wright.
