Darlene Helen Medina, of Deshler, NE, the daughter of Carl and Erna (Eilers) Hinz, was born on March 22, 1934, in Nelson, NE. She departed this life Thursday, June 30, 2022, at Tabitha Health Care Services in Lincoln, NE at the age of 88 years.

Darlene grew up outside of Oak, NE on the Hinz family farm with her parents and eight siblings. She was united in marriage to Richard Medina on March 24, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron, NE by Msgr. Clarence Crowley. This union was blessed with the birth of seven children.

Darlene wore many hats in her lifetime, including working in a restaurant while living in Wichita Falls, TX, Russell Stover candy in Lincoln, the broom factory in Deshler, being a foreman in welding at Reinke’s Manufacturing, and cleaning apartments in Omaha. Darlene was very dedicated to her family as a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She enjoyed playing cards with family, tending to plants and flowers, and loved animals. Darlene was also a fan of watching Husker football and volleyball on tv. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family meals and holidays and passed that on to her children and grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Richard, parents, infant daughter Lisa Ann, brothers Eldred, Raymond, James, LeRoy, and sisters Gertrude, Margie, and Rose.

Darlene is survived by sons David and wife Julie of Lincoln, Daniel and wife Laurie of Dallas, TX, and Gilbert of Deshler; daughters Patricia Medina of Lincoln, LaVerne Starks and husband Eric of Lincoln, and Laura Medina of Brattleboro, VT; sister Shirley Hinz of Lincoln, 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be Friday, July 8, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church in Hebron. Officiant will be Father Steven Major; acolyte Roger Retzlaff; readers grandsons Landon Johnson and Eric Starks, organist Julie Kriesel, and cantor Carlece Kenner. Congregational hymns are “Amazing Grace,” “Be Not Afraid,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” and “Only A Shadow.” No visitation/cremation. Rosary service will be held Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Kroll Funeral Home Chapel in Hebron at 5:30 P.M. Condolences may be left at www.krollfh.com. Memorial in care of the family can be sent to LaVerne Starks, 7230 Adams St, Lincoln, NE 68507. Inurnment in the church cemetery. Honorary pall bearers will be the grandsons and granddaughters.
