Eveline Bauer Obituary

Obit Eveline Anora Bauer-99 of Hebron, NE

Kroll Funeral Home Hebron, NE 402-768-6165

Eveline Mathiesen Bauer of Hebron, NE was born December 11, 1919, at her family’s home near Hebron, Nebraska, to Friedrich von and Elsie (Bartels) Fintel. She departed this life Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, NE at the age of 99 years.

The fifth of eight children, she was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended grade school near Hebron and high school at Hebron High. In February 1936, at the age of 16, tragedy struck Eveline’s family when her mother died after a brief illness. Her mother’s illness had made it necessary for her to leave high school to help care for her three younger siblings. Just two years later, in 1938, her father died. Eveline’s feisty, hard-working, creative personality carried her through this difficult time, and also served her well throughout her entire life.

It was during this time that she met her future husband, Theodore “Ted” Mathiesen of Chester, Nebraska. Ted enlisted in the United States Army on November 6, 1941, just weeks before Pearl Harbor and the declaration of war by President Franklin Roosevelt. The young couple married on February 18, 1942, in Hebron, and shortly thereafter Eveline moved to Washington where Ted was stationed at McCord Field in Tacoma. After his deployment to active duty in the Pacific Theater, she moved to Oregon to be near relatives. They returned to Hebron following his honorable discharge in November of 1945 where, except for a brief return to Oregon in the mid 1960s, they spent the rest of their lives. Five children were born to their marriage: Robert James, Lois Marie, Floyd Ervin, Roger Allen and Larry Ray. Ted died on December 1, 1982.

Eveline liked to reminisce about the area dances she and Ted attended, family vacations, and good times with friends. She was a gifted seamstress and quilter who created dozens of hand-made quilts, scores of embroidered tea towel sets, and hundreds of potholders for family and friends. She enjoyed entering her handiwork in the Thayer County Fair and took pride in the recognition it always received. She also donated dozens of hand-made lap robes to Nebraska veterans homes. Other hobbies included gardening, and canning and preserving what her garden produced, and she always welcomed the company of friends and neighbors. Most of all, she treasured her time with grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Early in life she worked for Abe Records at the Hebron Hotel, and later at Hesteds and Skogmos department stores, and she served as a volunteer for her church, the local VFW and American Legion, and many other projects and events.

On March 14, 1985, Eveline married Raymond Bauer of Hebron at Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron by Rev. Stenson. Ray was also a veteran of World War II and father of Sue Bauer Wulfekoetter, Jay Bauer, and Kathy Bauer Anderson. He preceded Eveline in death.

She is survived by her sons Robert of Hebron, Floyd of Hebron, Roger and wife Beverly of Kearney, and Larry and wife Audrey of Lincoln; daughter Lois James of Kewanee, Illinois; grandchildren Eric (Kristy) Mathiesen, Michelle (Kurt) Mitthun, Michael James, Mark (Darcy) James, Jennifer Lohmeier, Kristin (James) Winchester, Lindsay Mathiesen, Vagas (Lauren Biggs) Mathiesen, and Katie (Jeremy Brown) Mathiesen; 14 great grandchildren; her great-great grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and friends.

In addition to her husbands, Eveline was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and brothers-in-law Ida and Fred Rhodes, Irmagard “Leona” and Paul Uphoff, Frieda and Harold Wilson, and Erna Zeibig Troop and Ernest Zeibig; infant brother Herbert Fintel; and brothers and sisters-in-law Elden and Ruth Fintel and Otto and Doris Fintel; son-in-law Stephen James; granddaughter Melissa James Rottinghaus; and great grandson Jeffrey Dahle, Jr.
